Persuading: defending a position aloud
At B2, the examiner no longer wants a list of opinions; they want a structured argument that genuinely tries to win them over. Persuading means stating a clear thesis, supporting it with reasons and examples, anticipating the counter-argument, and closing with conviction. The same moves work in a debate, a meeting, or the speaking task where you must defend a viewpoint to a sceptical listener.

The persuasion structure
A convincing turn follows a clear arc. First you announce your position (Je suis convaincu que...). Then you argue with connectors that signal hierarchy (d'abord, par ailleurs, surtout). You concede a point to seem fair (Certes..., il n'en demeure pas moins que...), and finally you conclude (En définitive...). Naming this skeleton aloud reassures the listener that you control your reasoning.

Rhetorical devices
To sound persuasive rather than merely correct, lean on three classic devices. The rhetorical question (Qui pourrait sérieusement le nier ?) makes the listener agree silently. The tricolon, three parallel items, gives rhythm and weight (libre, juste, durable). And concession followed by rebuttal signals intellectual honesty while keeping the upper hand. Use them sparingly: one well-placed device beats five.
