At B2 level, the written tasks of the TEF Canada and the TCF Canada ask you to do more than describe or narrate: you must take a position and defend it. An argued text (un texte argumenté) presents a clear point of view, supports it with structured reasons and examples, addresses the opposite view, and closes with a measured conclusion. The quality of your structure matters as much as the quality of your French.

The classic structure
A French argued text usually follows a three-part movement. The thesis (la thèse) states the position you defend. The antithesis (l'antithèse) presents the objections or the opposing view honestly. The synthesis (la synthèse) does not simply repeat the thesis: it weighs both sides and arrives at a reasoned, often nuanced, final position. Each part should be a distinct paragraph introduced by a clear connector.

Connectors that carry the argument
Logical connectors signal each step of your reasoning, and examiners look for them. To add a point: de plus, par ailleurs, en outre. To oppose: cependant, en revanche, néanmoins. To concede then counter: certes... mais, bien que followed by the subjunctive. To conclude: en définitive, somme toute, ainsi. Vary them: repeating mais ten times weakens an otherwise strong text.
