Listening sub-skills for TEF and TCF

At B2, listening is no longer about catching every word, it is about strategy. The TEF and TCF Canada test distinct sub-skills: identifying the speaker's intention, following an argument, spotting an implicit conclusion, and resisting distractors. Crucially, both exams play each recording in a strict way, so your method matters as much as your ear. This lesson teaches you to listen actively, predict, and decide under pressure.

Grammar and strategy: single play versus replay

The two exams differ in a way you must internalise. In the TEF Canada, most listening items are heard only once, so you read the question first, predict, and commit immediately. In the TCF Canada, recordings are also typically played once but the pacing between items is generous, giving you a few seconds to read ahead. The coping skill is the same: never replay in your head while the next item starts, or you lose two answers at once. Train yourself to let go of a missed item and move on.

Complétez la stratégie : lire d'abord la question, puis ___ la réponse avant la fin du clip.

Complete the strategy: read the question first, then ___ the answer before the clip ends.

Au TEF, on lit la question, puis on ____ la réponse sans attendre une réécoute.

The TEF micro-trottoir with 3 options

A signature TEF Canada task is the micro-trottoir: short street interviews where several people react to one question. You hear a person and must match their opinion to a visual or a statement, very often choosing between exactly three options. The trap is that all three options sound plausible, and the speaker rarely uses the exact words on screen. You must hear the intention behind a paraphrase, not a keyword. Listen for connectors of nuance: plutôt, certes... mais, au fond.
