The vocabulary of ideas

At B2, the examiner expects you to talk about ideas, not just facts. Whether you defend an opinion on the environment, weigh up a social policy or summarise an argument, you need precise abstract nouns: words like a hypothesis, a consequence, a nuance. These nouns let you name the moving parts of an argument and structure your thinking out loud, which is exactly what the TEF and TCF reward.

Practice

Associez chaque nom abstrait à son sens.

Match each abstract noun with its meaning.

Grammar: turning verbs and adjectives into abstract nouns

French builds many abstract nouns with regular endings. Adjectives often give nouns in -ité (réel, la réalité) or -ence/-ance (cohérent, la cohérence). Verbs give nouns in -tion (argumenter, l'argumentation), -ment (raisonner, le raisonnement) or -ation. This process, called nominalisation, makes your writing denser and more formal: instead of parce que les prix augmentent you write en raison de la hausse des prix. Almost all these nouns are abstract, so they take no plural when they name a concept (la justice, la liberté).

◎ On the examIn the TEF Canada and TCF Canada speaking sections, the examiner rewards candidates who structure an argument with abstract nouns (un enjeu, une conséquence, un compromis) rather than only verbs. Phrases like le véritable enjeu, c'est... signal a B2 to C1 level and earn points for richness of vocabulary.
◎ On the examIn the written comprehension of the TCF Canada, abstract nouns often hold the key to a paragraph's main idea. When a question asks for the idée principale, scan for nouns like constat, enjeu or remise en question: they usually mark where the author states a thesis.
⚠ Heads upDo not confuse une question (a question you ask) with une remise en question (a calling into doubt). Likewise, la portée means scope or significance, not a door (une porte). False precision with abstract nouns is a common B2 trap.
