Advanced logical connectors

At B2 level, a written argument is judged less on isolated correct sentences than on how those sentences are linked. Logical connectors are the signposts that tell the reader where your reasoning is going: this causes that, this contradicts that, this is the consequence of that. Mastering a varied, register-appropriate set of connectors is the single fastest way to move an essay from B1 to B2.

We will work through four relations that recur in every TEF and TCF written task: cause (why something happens), consequence (what follows from it), opposition (two ideas placed side by side as contrary), and concession (admitting a point while maintaining your own). The trick is to vary your connectors and to respect the grammar each one demands.

étant donné quegiven that (cause, formal)
dans la mesure oùinsofar as / since (cause, nuanced)
du fait deowing to (cause + noun)
par conséquentconsequently
de ce faitas a result / hence
si bien queso that / with the result that
en revancheon the other hand (opposition)
alors quewhereas (opposition)
tandis quewhile / whereas
bien quealthough (concession + subjunctive)
même sieven if (concession + indicative)
quand bien mêmeeven though / even if (formal, conditional)
certes, ... maisadmittedly, ... but (concession)
néanmoinsnevertheless

Cause and consequence

To express cause beyond the basic parce que, reach for étant donné que or dans la mesure où (both followed by a full clause in the indicative) or, with a noun, du fait de and en raison de. For consequence, prefer par conséquent, de ce fait or si bien que. Note that si bien que introduces a clause, whereas par conséquent behaves like an adverb and can sit after the verb.

Given that remote work reduces commuting, many companies have made it standard.
Cause + indicative clause
Urban rents have risen sharply; consequently, young workers are moving away from city centres.
Consequence (adverbial)
The candidate had not prepared his file, so that the interview was cut short.

Opposition and concession

Opposition simply contrasts two facts: use en revanche, alors que or tandis que. Concession goes further: you concede that something is true and then argue against its weight. The classic markers are bien que and quoique (which require the subjunctive), même si (indicative), and the rhetorical pair certes ... mais, much prized by examiners because it shows you can weigh both sides.

Although the results are encouraging, it would be premature to declare victory.
Concession + subjunctive (soient)
Admittedly, this reform is expensive; but it prepares for the future.
Concession then counter-argument
Some advocate growth, whereas others defend restraint.
Pure opposition
⚠ Heads upBien que and quoique always take the subjunctive: say bien qu'il soit, never bien qu'il est. By contrast, même si takes the indicative. Confusing the two is one of the most penalised errors at B2.

◎ On the examIn the TEF Canada expression écrite (Section B) and the TCF Canada written essay, graders explicitly look for varied connectors signalling articulation logique. Repeating donc and mais caps your score at B1. Aim to use at least one connector of cause, one of consequence and one of concession per essay.
◎ On the examA reliable B2 move on both exams: open a paragraph with Certes ... to grant the opposing view, then pivot with ... mais or néanmoins to your thesis. This shows nuance and earns marks for argumentative structure.
Practice

Translate into French, keeping the concession-then-counter structure.
