L'implicite, le ton, l'opinion
Implication, tone, opinion
Implication, tone, opinion
At B2, the hardest listening questions are rarely about facts. They ask what the speaker really thinks, whether they approve or object, and whether they are serious, ironic or simply polite. The information is often implicit: it lives in the choice of words, the register and the tone rather than in an explicit statement. Learning to read these signals is what separates a B2 from a C1 score.

Register as a tone cue
The same idea sounds very different depending on register. A shift into the register soutenu (formal) can signal seriousness, distance or even cold disapproval, while a sudden drop into the familier (casual) often marks complicity, annoyance or sarcasm. Watch for markers like cela dit, certes... mais, il n'empêche que: they announce that the speaker is about to qualify or reverse what they just said.

Inference: hearing what is not said
Inference means drawing a conclusion the speaker leaves implicit. If a colleague says j'aurais préféré être consulté, no one is openly criticised, yet the reproach is clear. Conditional verbs (j'aurais aimé, on aurait pu), restrictive structures (ne... que) and understatement (ce n'est pas terrible) all carry meaning beyond their literal words. In the exam, ask yourself: what would the speaker say if they were being blunt?
Un collègue dit sur un ton plat : « C'est malin ! » après une erreur. Que veut-il dire ?
A colleague says flatly: 'C'est malin !' after a mistake. What do they mean?
