Describing a person

To describe someone you need adjectives, for looks (grand, petit, brun, blond) and for character (gentil, drôle, sérieux). Two rules matter: adjectives agree in gender and number, and most go after the noun (un homme grand), the opposite of English.

grand(e) / petit(e)tall / short
brun(e) / blond(e)dark-haired / blond
les yeuxeyes
les cheveuxhair
gentil(le)kind
drôlefunny
sérieux / sérieuseserious
sympanice (informal, invariable)

Agreement, and c'est vs il est

Adjectives change for a woman: grand -> grande, gentil -> gentille, sérieux -> sérieuse. And choose the right structure: use il/elle est + adjective (Elle est grande), but c'est + un/une + noun (C'est une amie). A quick test: if a noun follows, use c'est.

Elle est grande et brune.
She is tall and dark-haired.
elle est + adjective
Il a les yeux verts.
He has green eyes.
avoir for features
C'est une femme sympa.
She is a nice woman.
c'est + noun

✦ TipMost descriptive adjectives go after the noun: « un homme grand », « une voiture rouge ». A small set (grand, petit, bon, beau, jeune, vieux) can go before, you will meet those later.
◎ On the examOn the exam. Describing people comes up in both speaking and writing. Combine looks + character + a feature: « Elle est petite, brune, très gentille, et elle a les yeux marron. »
