Grammar: the partitive article
When you buy some of something you cannot count one by one (water, bread, cheese), French uses the partitive: du (masculine), de la (feminine), de l' (before a vowel), des (plural). After a negative it becomes simply de: Je ne veux pas de pain.

After a precise quantity, French uses just de (no du, de la or des): un kilo de tomates, beaucoup de lait, un peu de sucre, assez de pain. This is a very common listening trap: you hear the quantity word, then de, then the food.
