Asking questions

French has three ways to ask a yes/no question, from informal to formal. Intonation: Tu aimes le café ? With est-ce que: Est-ce que tu aimes le café ? By inversion: Aimes-tu le café ? All three mean the same; the difference is register.

qui ?who?
que / quoi ?what?
où ?where?
quand ?when?
comment ?how?
pourquoi ?why?
combien ?how much / many?
quel / quelle ?which / what?

Question words and register

Put a question word in front: Où est-ce que vous habitez ? or, more formally, Où habitez-vous ? For the exam, inversion sounds the most polished: Comment allez-vous ? Pourquoi apprenez-vous le français ?

Est-ce que vous aimez le français ?
Do you like French?
est-ce que, neutral
Où habitez-vous ?
Where do you live?
inversion, formal

◎ On the examOn the exam. In the speaking interview you also have to ASK questions (TEF Section A / TCF tâche 2). Inversion and est-ce que both score well; pure intonation sounds too casual.
✦ TipUse quel with a noun: Quel âge ? Quelle heure ? It agrees: quel (m), quelle (f), quels / quelles (pl).
Practice

Quel mot demande « who » ?

Which word asks « who »?

Practice

Traduisez en français (formel, inversion).
