Agreeing and disagreeing

In a debate, giving your opinion is only half the job. The other half is reacting to what someone else said: agreeing, agreeing partly, or pushing back politely. At B1, examiners want to hear you do this with a range of expressions, not just oui and non. The trick is to react, then justify with a connector.

Je suis (tout à fait) d'accord.I (totally) agree.
Tu as raison / Vous avez raison. You're right.
C'est vrai, et en plus...That's true, and what's more...
Je partage ton avis.I share your view.
Je ne suis pas (du tout) d'accord.I don't agree (at all).
Je ne pense pas, non.I don't think so, no.
Là, je ne te suis pas. There, I don't follow you.
C'est discutable.That's debatable.
Tu as raison, mais...You're right, but...
Je comprends, cependant...I understand, however...
Dans un sens, oui, pourtant...In a way, yes, yet...
Au contraireOn the contrary
À mon avisIn my opinion
Personnellement, je trouve que...Personally, I find that...

Grammar: concession connectors

Partial agreement is the most useful move in a debate, and it runs on concession connectors. Mais (but) is the basic one. To sound more B1, use cependant, pourtant and néanmoins (however / yet), or bien que + subjunctive (although). A clean structure is: acknowledge the point, then introduce your reservation with the connector. Tu as raison sur ce point, cependant je pense que c'est plus compliqué.

Complétez avec la bonne forme après « bien que » (subjonctif de « être »).

Complete with the correct verb form after 'bien que' (subjunctive of être).
