The pronouns y and en

In everyday French, you almost never repeat a noun once it is clear from context. Instead, you replace it with a short pronoun. Two of the most useful are y and en: they make your speech sound fluid and natural, which examiners reward in the speaking and writing sections. Y usually stands for a place or a thing introduced by à; en usually stands for a thing introduced by de or by a quantity.

y allerto go there
s'y rendreto go there (more formal)
y penserto think about it
en venirto come from there / to get to (a point)
en parlerto talk about it
en avoir besointo need some / to need it
en vouloirto want some
il y athere is / there are
le quartierthe neighbourhood
la démarchethe (administrative) step/procedure
le rendez-vousthe appointment
s'occuper deto take care of / to deal with

When to use y

Use y to replace a place (often introduced by à, chez, dans, sur) or a thing introduced by à after verbs like penser à, réfléchir à, s'intéresser à. It goes before the verb. Important: y never replaces a person; for a person you keep à lui, à elle, etc.

Tu vas à la mairie ? Oui, j'y vais demain.
Are you going to the town hall? Yes, I'm going there tomorrow.
y = à la mairie (place)
Je pense souvent à mon avenir au Canada. J'y pense tous les jours.
I often think about my future in Canada. I think about it every day.
y = à mon avenir (thing)
Je pense à ma sœur. Je pense à elle.
I'm thinking about my sister. I'm thinking about her.
Person, so NOT y

When to use en

Use en to replace a thing introduced by de (after parler de, avoir besoin de, s'occuper de) or a quantity: an indefinite article (du, de la, des), a number, or a word like beaucoup, plusieurs, assez. With a number or quantity word, you repeat that word at the end: J'en ai deux.

Tu as besoin de documents ? Oui, j'en ai besoin pour mon dossier.
Do you need documents? Yes, I need some for my file.
en = de documents (de)
Vous voulez du café ? Oui, j'en veux bien, merci.
Would you like some coffee? Yes, I'd like some, thank you.
en = du café (partitive)
Combien d'enfants avez-vous ? J'en ai trois.
How many children do you have? I have three (of them).
Repeat the number: en ... trois

Ordering double pronouns

When two object pronouns appear together before the verb, they follow a fixed order: me / te / se / nous / vous, then le / la / les, then lui / leur, then y, then en. A handy rule: y and en always come last, and in that order (y before en). So you say Il y en a. (There is/are some.)

Des conseils ? Mon conseiller m'en donne souvent.
Advice? My advisor often gives me some.
me + en : m'en
Tu as parlé du rendez-vous à Paul ? Oui, je lui en ai parlé.
Did you tell Paul about the appointment? Yes, I told him about it.
lui + en : lui en
Il reste des places au cours ? Oui, il y en a encore.
Are there spots left in the class? Yes, there are still some.
y + en : y en

◎ On the examIn the TEF Canada and TCF Canada speaking sections, using y and en correctly instead of repeating nouns is a clear marker of an upper-intermediate (B1+) speaker. When you answer a question, try to reuse a pronoun from the prompt: Vous allez souvent à la bibliothèque ? Oui, j'y vais chaque semaine.
⚠ Heads upCommon mistake: forgetting that en keeps the number or quantity word. J'ai deux billets becomes J'en ai deux, not J'en ai. Dropping deux changes the meaning to a vague "some".
◎ On the examIn the listening sections, fast spoken French glues these pronouns together: il y en a sounds like "ilyana", and j'en ai like "jané". Train your ear to catch these clusters so you don't lose the meaning.
