Continuing a news item (TEF Section A)

In Section A of the TEF Canada written expression, you read the beginning of a news item (un fait divers) and you must continue the story in about 80 words. The story is already started for you: a place, a time, characters and the first action are given. Your job is not to invent a new topic but to write what happens next, keeping the same logic, the same characters and the same past-tense narration. Section A tests whether you can produce a short, coherent narrative under time pressure.

The format

You write 60 to 80 words minimum and you have around 60 minutes for both Sections A and B together, so budget roughly 20 minutes here. Read the opening twice: underline the who, the where and the when. Then continue in the same tense, usually the passé composé for finished actions and the imparfait for description and background. Stay neutral and factual, like a journalist: no opinions, no I, just the third person.

Grammar: narration in the past

A good continuation alternates two tenses. The imparfait sets the scene and describes (il faisait nuit, les rues étaient vides). The passé composé pushes the action forward, one event after another (elle a entendu un bruit, elle est sortie, elle a appelé). Link your sentences with time connectors so the reader follows the sequence: d'abord, puis, quelques minutes plus tard, finalement.

◎ On the examOn the TEF Canada, Section A is graded on coherence, vocabulary range and grammar, not on imagination. The examiner rewards a clear sequence of events and correct past tenses far more than a clever plot. Always finish your story with a short conclusion (an arrest, a rescue, the next day) so it does not feel cut off.
◎ On the examWatch the word count: below the minimum, your score drops sharply on both the TEF Canada and the TCF Canada written tests. Around 80 words is enough; a longer text only adds more chances for mistakes.
⚠ Heads upDo not switch into the present tense halfway through. If the opening is written in the past, your whole continuation must stay in the past. Mixing tenses is the most common Section A mistake.
