Formal calls and interviews

In the world of work you constantly have to phone people you do not know, leave messages and answer interview questions. The vocabulary stays simple, but the register rises sharply: you soften every request with the conditionnel de politesse and you address people with vous. This lesson gives you the fixed phrases that make you sound professional on the phone and in an interview.

Grammar: the polite conditional

To sound courteous on the phone, French replaces the blunt present tense with the conditionnel. Je veux parler à... (I want to speak to) becomes Je voudrais parler à... (I would like to speak to). The most useful verbs are je voudrais, pourriez-vous (could you) and auriez-vous (would you have). The conditional adds an invisible cushion: the request is exactly the same, but it no longer sounds like an order.

Bonjour, je voudrais parler à Madame Lefèvre, s'il vous plaît.
Hello, I would like to speak to Mrs Lefèvre, please.
Opening a call
Pourriez-vous me passer le service commercial ?
Could you put me through to the sales department?
Polite request
Auriez-vous un moment pour fixer un rendez-vous ?
Would you have a moment to set up an appointment?
Softened ask
Je vous rappellerai dans l'après-midi.
I will call you back in the afternoon.
Conditional / future for commitment

Grammar: reporting a request

When you take or pass on a message, you report what someone asked, often with demander de + infinitive. Rappelez-moi (Call me back) becomes Il a demandé de le rappeler (He asked you to call him back). Notice the changes: the imperative disappears, you add de before the infinitive, and pronouns shift from moi/vous to le/lui. This is exactly how you relay a phone message.

Le client a demandé que vous le rappeliez avant midi.
The client asked you to call him back before noon.
Reported request (subjunctive)
Elle m'a prié de vous transmettre ses coordonnées.
She asked me to pass on her contact details to you.

In the interview

An interview reuses the same formal register, but in full sentences. You greet, thank the recruiter for the meeting, present your experience and end politely. Strong closing phrases like Je vous remercie de votre temps (Thank you for your time) and Je reste à votre disposition (I remain at your disposal) leave an excellent impression.

Je vous remercie de me recevoir aujourd'hui.
Thank you for meeting with me today.
Interview opening
◎ On the examIn the TEF Canada and TCF Canada speaking sections, one task often puts you on the phone: you must call to get information or arrange a meeting. Examiners reward the conditionnel de politesse and a consistent vous. Saying Je voudrais instead of Je veux visibly raises your register score.
⚠ Heads upDo not answer the phone with Allô ? in a professional setting. Allô is fine to check the line is working, but you greet with Bonjour and state your name or company. Replying only Allô ? to a recruiter sounds careless.

0 of 11done. Finish the rest to complete (Try again, or Show answer if you’re stuck).
