Telling a structured story

At B1, narrating means more than listing events. A good story has a structure: a setting, a sequence of actions, and a turning point. In French, this rests on two pillars: choosing the right past tense for each sentence, and linking your sentences with temporal connectors. Both the TEF Canada and TCF Canada reward candidates who narrate clearly rather than just describing.

Grammar: imparfait or passé composé?

These two tenses divide the work. The imparfait paints the background: settings, weather, ongoing states, habits (it was raining, I used to live there). The passé composé reports the completed actions that move the story forward (suddenly, the phone rang). A useful image: the imparfait is the stage, the passé composé is what happens on it. The plus-que-parfait (j'avais fini) marks an action that happened before another past action.

Grammar: reporting what was said

Stories often include what people said. Discours indirect turns direct speech into a reported clause. With a present-tense reporting verb (il dit que), the tense inside stays the same, but pronouns and possessives shift: Il dit : « Je suis fatigué » becomes Il dit qu'il est fatigué. Questions change too: « Tu viens ? » becomes Il demande si je viens; « Qu'est-ce que tu fais ? » becomes Il demande ce que je fais.

Elle me dit qu'elle a oublié son passeport.
She tells me she has forgotten her passport.

◎ On the examIn the TEF Canada and TCF Canada written expression, a common task asks you to recount an experience (a trip, an incident, a memory). Examiners look for correct alternation between imparfait and passé composé and for varied connectors. Use at least three different connectors to show range.
⚠ Heads upDo not narrate an entire story in the imparfait. Beginners often write Je marchais, je voyais, je rentrais for completed actions. Those single, finished events need the passé composé: J'ai marché, j'ai vu, je suis rentré.
◎ On the examWhen you report speech in an exam answer, keep the reporting verb in the present (il explique que, elle ajoute que) to stay simple and accurate. This avoids tense-shift errors while still showing you control the discours indirect.
