The present subjunctive (intro)
When you give and justify an opinion, you constantly say what you want, what is necessary, and what you doubt. In French, all of these push the verb into a special mood: the subjonctif. It almost always sits after que. So Je pense qu'il vient (indicative, a plain fact) becomes Je veux qu'il vienne (subjunctive, a wish). This lesson gives you the core triggers and the regular endings; you do not need every verb yet, just the reflex.

For most regular verbs, take the ils form of the present, drop the -ent, and add the endings -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent. From ils parlent you get que je parle, que tu parles, qu'il parle, que nous parlions, que vous parliez, qu'ils parlent. A few key verbs are irregular and worth memorising now: être (que je sois), avoir (que j'aie), aller (que j'aille), faire (que je fasse), pouvoir (que je puisse).

Two triggers cover most of what you need in a debate. Il faut que expresses necessity and obligation: Il faut que tu fasses un effort. Vouloir que expresses will or desire toward another person: Je veux qu'elle réussisse. Note the change of subject: you want someone else to do something. If the subject stays the same, use the infinitive instead: Je veux réussir (no que, no subjunctive).
