Telling about a weekend

Talking about what you did at the weekend is one of the most common everyday conversations, and it comes up constantly in the exam. To do it well you need the passé composé, the main tense for finished past actions in French. In this lesson you will learn how to build it, how to say what just happened with venir de, and how to put your story in order with sequencing words.

Practice

Associez les mots de séquence et les verbes français à leur sens anglais.

Match the French sequencing words and verbs to their English meaning.

 • d'abord
 • ensuite
 • enfin
 • je suis allé(e)
 • j'ai mangé
Practice

Which helper verb does aller use in the passé composé?

Practice

Grammar: the passé composé

The passé composé has two parts: a helper verb (avoir or être) in the present, plus the past participle of the main verb. Most verbs use avoir: j'ai mangé (I ate). A small group of movement verbs uses être, and with être the participle agrees with the subject: elle est allée, ils sont partis. Regular participles end in -é (-er verbs), -i (-ir verbs) or -u (many -re verbs).

On Saturday, I watched a film.

Learn

Grammar: venir de (the recent past)

To say something happened a moment ago, use venir de in the present plus an infinitive: je viens de rentrer (I have just got home). It is simple and very useful when you tell a story: Je viens de voir un film means the action is fresh, not a fixed point long ago.

◎ On the examOn the TEF Canada. In Speaking Section B you describe a recent experience to a friend. A weekend story is a perfect fit: lead with one or two passé composé actions, link them with d'abord, ensuite, enfin, and the examiner hears clear, ordered narration.
◎ On the examOn the TCF Canada. The written expression test often asks you to recount events in a message or short text. Mixing passé composé with sequencing adverbs shows control of tense and structure, which raises your band.
⚠ Heads upCommon mistake. Movement and state-change verbs (aller, venir, partir, rester, naître) take être, not avoir. Say je suis allé, never j'ai allé. And remember the agreement: a woman writes je suis allée.
