Feelings and social life

Social life runs on feelings: you say how you feel, you invite someone, and you react to their answer. In the speaking sections of the exam, you often have to invite a friend, accept or politely decline, and explain why. This lesson gives you the words for emotions and the short phrases that keep a friendly conversation going.

Grammar: saying how you feel

Most feelings use être plus an adjective that agrees with the speaker: Je suis content (man) but Je suis contente (woman). A few feelings use avoir: avoir peur (to be afraid), avoir envie de (to feel like). To explain a cause, add parce que: Je suis triste parce que tu pars.

Je suis très content de te voir.
I'm very happy to see you.
être + adjectif
Elle a peur de parler en public.
She's afraid of speaking in public.

Grammar: connectors donc, alors, comme

Connectors link your ideas and make speech sound natural. Donc (so, therefore) introduces a result. Alors (so, then) is more conversational and often opens a reaction. Comme (since, as) introduces a reason at the start of a sentence: Comme je suis fatigué, je reste chez moi.

Il pleut, donc on annule le pique-nique.
It's raining, so we're cancelling the picnic.
donc = result
Tu es libre samedi ? Alors viens dîner !
Are you free Saturday? Then come for dinner!
alors = reaction

◎ On the examOn the TEF Canada. In Speaking Section B you have to convince a friend to do an activity. Invite clearly, react to their feelings, and use connectors like donc and alors to link your arguments; flat answers with no connectors lower your coherence score.
⚠ Heads upDon't forget agreement on feeling adjectives. A woman says Je suis contente and fatiguée, with a final e. Saying Je suis content for a woman is a common slip examiners notice.
