Imparfait vs passé composé

Imparfait or passé composé

French has two everyday past tenses, and the hard part is choosing between them. The passé composé tells what happened: a single, completed action. The imparfait sets the scene: how things were, what used to happen, an action still in progress. Describing a holiday, a childhood or a normal day means switching between the two, and the examiner listens closely for it.

Practice

Associez chaque marqueur de temps au temps qu'il annonce d'habitude.

Match each time word to the tense it usually signals.

  • tous les jours
  • soudain
  • d'habitude
  • un jour
  • autrefois

When to use each one

Use the imparfait for past habits (what you used to do), for descriptions (weather, age, feelings, the background) and for an action in progress. Use the passé composé for a finished action, often something that happened once or interrupted the background. A simple test: if you can say used to or was ...-ing in English, choose the imparfait.

◎ On the examOn the TCF Canada. In the speaking task you often describe a past experience (a trip, a memorable day). Set the scene with the imparfait (il faisait beau, j'étais content) and report what happened with the passé composé (j'ai pris le train, nous avons visité). Mixing both naturally raises your level.
◎ On the examOn the TEF Canada. The reading and listening sections use both tenses in short narratives. A question may turn on the difference: il lisait (he was reading, ongoing) versus il a lu (he read it, once). Read the time words (souvent, un jour, soudain) to decide.
⚠ Heads upCommon mistake: using the passé composé for a repeated habit. Tous les jours, j'allais à l'école (imparfait), not je suis allé. The passé composé would mean you went there only once.
