The imparfait
The imparfait is one of the two main past tenses in French. You use it to describe what things used to be like, to talk about habits in the past, and to set the background of a story. It answers questions like "what was going on?" rather than "what happened?"

How to form it
Take the nous form of the present tense, drop the -ons, and add the imparfait endings: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. For example, parler gives nous parlons, so the stem is parl-: je parlais, tu parlais, il parlait. Almost every verb follows this rule.

Imparfait or passé composé?
Use the imparfait for descriptions, habits and ongoing background. Use the passé composé for single, finished actions that move the story forward. Often the two work together: a background scene in the imparfait, then a sudden event in the passé composé.
