Pronouns and advice

When you talk about your health, you keep repeating the same words: the doctor, the medicine, my back, my appointment. To sound natural, French replaces these with short pronouns. In this lesson you learn to describe symptoms and give or follow advice while replacing words you have already named, and to say things plainly with full negation.

avoir mal à la têteto have a headache
avoir mal au dosto have a backache
avoir de la fièvreto have a fever
tousserto cough
être fatigué(e)to be tired
un médecina doctor
un médicamenta medicine
une ordonnancea prescription
se reposerto rest
prendre rendez-vousto make an appointment
un conseila piece of advice
guérirto get better / to heal

Grammar: COD and COI pronouns

A direct object (COD) answers who? or what? with no preposition: le, la, les. An indirect object (COI) answers to whom? and replaces à + a person: lui (to him/her), leur (to them). The pronoun goes before the verb: Je le prends. (I take it.) / Je lui parle. (I talk to him.)

Tu prends ce médicament ? Oui, je le prends.
Do you take this medicine? Yes, I take it.
COD: le = ce médicament
Tu parles au médecin ? Oui, je lui parle.
Do you talk to the doctor? Yes, I talk to him.
COI: lui = au médecin
Le médecin nous donne une ordonnance.
The doctor gives us a prescription.
nous = COI (to us)
Practice

Remplacez le médicament par un pronom COD.

Replace the medicine with a direct object pronoun.

Tu prends ce médicament ? Oui, je ____ prends.

Practice

Practice

Complétez avec la négation complète pour « jamais ».

Ne ____ ce médicament avec de l'alcool.

Learn

Grammar: the pronoun y

Use y to replace a place or à + a thing. It also goes before the verb: Tu vas chez le médecin ? Oui, j'y vais. (Yes, I'm going there.) / Tu penses à ton rendez-vous ? Oui, j'y pense. (Yes, I'm thinking about it.)

Je vais à la pharmacie. J'y vais à pied.
I'm going to the pharmacy. I'm going there on foot.
y = à la pharmacie (place)

Grammar: on and full negation

On often means we in speech (On va au lit. = We're going to bed) or a general you/people (On doit se reposer. = One must rest). For advice, full negation is useful: ne... jamais (never), ne... plus (no more / no longer), ne... rien (nothing), ne... personne (nobody). Example: Ne prends jamais ce médicament avec de l'alcool.

On ne fume plus, c'est mauvais pour la santé.
We don't smoke anymore, it's bad for your health.
ne... plus = no longer

◎ On the examOn the TEF Canada. In Speaking Section B you argue or advise. Replacing repeated nouns with le, lui, y makes your speech flow and shows control of grammar, which raises your fluency score.
⚠ Heads upCommon mistake: do not say Je parle lui. The pronoun comes before the verb: Je lui parle. Same for y and le/la/les.
◎ On the examOn the TCF Canada. The listening section often hides the answer in a negation. Il ne prend plus de café means he stopped, not that he drinks it. Listen for jamais, plus, rien, personne.
