The 9 NCLC levels, explained (and the only one most people need)

NCLC (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens) is simply the French-language twin of the CLB. IRCC converts your raw TEF or TCF Canada scores into an NCLC level for each of the four skills, and your immigration points are based on those levels, never on the raw scores directly.
The levels, briefly
- NCLC 4–6, basic to intermediate. Enough for some programs and for citizenship (which needs only NCLC 4 in speaking and listening), but below the Express Entry bonus threshold.
- NCLC 7, upper-intermediate (≈ CEFR B2). This is the one that matters. It unlocks the French-category draws and the bonus points.
- NCLC 8–9, advanced. Marginally more CRS in the core language factors, but the big jump is getting to 7.
- NCLC 10+, near-native. Diminishing returns for most applicants.
The exact NCLC 7 bands
For TEF Canada (post-December 2023 scale, each skill 0–699):
- Reading 434–461, Listening 434–461
- Writing 428–471, Speaking 456–493
For TCF Canada:
- Reading 453–498, Listening 458–502
- Writing 10–11, Speaking 10–11 (0–20 scale)
Why NCLC 7 unlocks "up to 50 points"
Reach NCLC 7 across all four French skills and IRCC grants additional CRS points for French ability:
- NCLC 7+ in French and English CLB 5+ → 50 points
- NCLC 7+ in French and English CLB 4 or none → 25 points
That is on top of the core language points, and on top of qualifying for the French-language category draws, whose cutoffs in 2025 dipped into the high 300s, far below the general rounds.

Le NCLC (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens) est tout simplement le pendant en langue française du CLB. IRCC convertit vos scores bruts au TEF ou au TCF Canada en un niveau NCLC pour chacune des quatre compétences, et vos points d'immigration reposent sur ces niveaux, jamais directement sur les scores bruts.
Les niveaux, en bref
- NCLC 4–6, du niveau de base à intermédiaire. Suffisant pour certains programmes et pour la citoyenneté (qui n'exige que le NCLC 4 en expression orale et en compréhension orale), mais en dessous du seuil du bonus d'Entrée express.
- NCLC 7, intermédiaire avancé (≈ niveau B2 du CECR). C'est celui qui compte. Il débloque les rondes de la catégorie francophone et les points bonus.
- NCLC 8–9, avancé. Un peu plus de points CRS dans les facteurs linguistiques principaux, mais le grand saut consiste à atteindre le niveau 7.
- NCLC 10+, quasi natif. Des rendements décroissants pour la plupart des candidats.

Pour le TEF Canada (échelle en vigueur depuis décembre 2023, chaque compétence notée de 0 à 699) :
- Compréhension écrite 434–461, Compréhension orale 434–461
- Expression écrite 428–471, Expression orale 456–493
Pour le TCF Canada :
- Compréhension écrite 453–498, Compréhension orale 458–502
- Expression écrite 10–11, Expression orale 10–11 (échelle de 0 à 20)
Pourquoi le NCLC 7 débloque « jusqu'à 50 points »
Atteignez le NCLC 7 dans les quatre compétences françaises et IRCC accorde des points CRS supplémentaires pour la compétence en français :
- NCLC 7+ en français et CLB 5+ en anglais → 50 points
- NCLC 7+ en français et CLB 4 ou aucun en anglais → 25 points
Cela s'ajoute aux points linguistiques principaux et au fait de se qualifier pour les rondes de la catégorie francophone, dont les seuils en 2025 sont descendus jusqu'aux environs de 390, bien en dessous des rondes générales.
